Junior Showmanship

  1. Classes:  Novice Junior, Open Junior, Novice Senior, Open Senior.
    Novice Classes:  For children at the time entries close who have not won three First Places in a Novice Class at a licensed or member show.
    Open Classes:  For children who have at the time entries close have won three First Places in Novice Junior Showmanship Class at a licensed or member show.
    JUNIOR:  At least 10 years old and under 14 years old on the day of the show.
    SENIOR:  At least 14 years old and under 18 years old on the day of the show.
    Best Junior Handler:  Winners from each class will compete for Best Junior.
    Dogs must be entered in Junior Showmanship Only or in a regular or non-regular class at the show.  A dog must be owned or co-owned by the Junior Handler or by his father, mother, brother, sister, uncle, aunt, grandfather, or grandmother.  Dogs entered for junior Showmanship must be eligible to compete in AKC Dog Shows or Obedience Trials.  Bitches in season are not eligible to compete.
  2. Junior Handlers who win a third Novice Class after close of entries may transfer their entry from the Novice Class to the Open Class provided this transfer is made with the Superintendent at least a half hour prior to the start of any judging at the Show.
  3. Winner of a Novice Class shall automatically become eligible, upon notice to the Open Class ring steward, to compete in the Open Class at the same show provided the win is their third first place award with competition and further providing there are one or more Juniors competing in the Open Class.
  4. Winning First place in an Open Class may qualify or count toward qualification for entry in limited Junior Showmanship Classes.  For information on eligibility requirements for limited Junior Showmanship Classes which have been approved by the AKC, write to the American Kennel Club, Show plans, 5580 Centerview Dr. #200, Raleigh, NC 27606-3390.
  5. Junior handlers must put their nine digit number on the entry blank as of January 1, 1989.  To obtain a Junior Handler number write or call American Kennel Club Show Records Department (919) 854-0136 or (919) 233-9767.
