I posted this message on the Showboxer List on Sara's
birthday.
Today's birthday is bittersweet. Sara, Breho Windwood E Z
Passion, turns 11.
She came to me from Brenda Stuckey of Breho Boxers. From the
first day she set
foot in my home, she has made such a difference in my life.
Those bright,
beautiful eyes would follow me everywhere. Our bond was one
of the reasons Sara
did not like to go to dog shows. She wanted nothing more
than to shadow my
every step at home. Sara has one of the most wonderful
personalities. Everyone
falls in love with her. I left her and Josie with friends in
Birmingham, AL
while I went to ABC in 2009. My friend's husband got so
attached to Sara that
he begged me to let them keep her.
Sara had 5 points when she developed an abscess on the ribs
of the judge's
side. After trying everything, the vet finally did
exploratory surgery and
discovered a foxtail lodged in Sara's ribs. He had the nerve
to be excited
about it, since he had never seen one except in pictures. We
still aren't sure
where she picked it up. We don't have that pest in our area
of the country,
thank God. Even after the thing was removed, the infection
from its passage
kept flaring up. Sara has no padding on her ribs from having
to remove affected
tissue.
We finally got Sara healthy and had a few good years without
incident. Then she
was bitten in the eyeball by a young copperhead snake. My
vet said he had never
seen a dog bitten in the eye in all his years as a vet.
Leave it to Sara to be
the first. We had to remove the eyeball, and a later surgery
had to be done to
remove more tissue that had been affected by the venom.
A few more good years and Sara developed really high
pressure in her remaining
eye. It was hurting her and she couldn't see anyway, so we
removed the other
eye. She adjusted to being blind really well. She can
navigate in the yard,
finding the wading pool and front steps with ease. She waits
at the steps for
me to guide her. She is such a smart girl.
Now Sara has DM. How cruel can life be to one animal? She is
dealing with the
new problem with typical Sara fortitude. She is an
inspiration to all who know
her. I know our days together are limited, but you can't be
around her without
being caught up in her zest for life and love of people. I
feel honored and
blessed to have shared the life of this wonderful boxer.
Now it is August 6, 2011. Sara and I made our last journey
together and
Dr. Carter helped her to a better place. She has her beautiful eyes back
and
can run and play again. I'm sure when I see her again, she
will be jumping
straight up in one spot. She could jump high enough to go
over the fence, but
always just went up and down. Then she will put her head on
my chest again
and we will be at peace. My sweet, sweet girl.
